From the Desk of Superintendent Dr. Leatha Williams:
Today is a moment of pride for all of us across Pocahontas County. We are excited to share that Pocahontas County Schools has moved up several positions in the rankings and is now ranked #9 in West Virginia, placing us among the Top 10 school districts in the state! 🎉🏆
This accomplishment reflects the collective efforts of our entire community. Just one year ago, our district was working through state intervention status. Today, we are celebrating a Top 10 ranking. That kind of progress does not happen by chance. It happens when students, educators, staff, families, community partners, and residents come together with a shared commitment to helping our children succeed.
Every student who worked hard, every teacher who inspired learning, every staff member who supported our schools, every parent who encouraged their child, and every community member who invested in our future helped make this achievement possible. This recognition belongs to all of us.
As we celebrate, it is important to note that this ranking data is different from our Accountability Data. Accountability measures exclude students who were not enrolled for the full academic year, while this ranking includes students who were assessed in our school system. As a result, the two measures should not be viewed as interchangeable.
Even with that distinction, this achievement is worth celebrating. It demonstrates the dedication, perseverance, and teamwork that can be found throughout Pocahontas County. It is a reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together on behalf of our students.
While we are proud of how far we have come, we are equally excited about where we are headed. The progress we have made over the past year shows that there is no limit to what our schools and communities can achieve together.
🏆 Proud of Our Progress. Grateful for Our Community.
⭐ Working Together for Student Success.
🚀 The Best Is Yet to Come!

Today, the students and staff of Hillsboro Elementary came together to plant an apple tree in memory of Dr. Sue Hollandsworth—a beloved teacher, former principal of Hillsboro Elementary, and dedicated member of the Pocahontas County Board of Education.
Dr. Hollandsworth’s impact on our school and community is immeasurable. Her passion for education, her leadership, and her love for students will always be a part of Hillsboro Elementary.
This apple tree will serve as a living tribute to her legacy, reminding us each day of the seeds she planted in the lives of so many. A memorial plaque will soon be placed at the tree in her honor.
We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate her life and the lasting difference she made. ❤️

Our kindergarteners were the top fundraisers in this year’s American Heart Association Fundraiser, and we couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and big hearts!
As a special reward, they were treated to a wonderful visit from Kasha, a service dog from Green Bank Elementary School. 🐾 The students absolutely loved spending time with Kasha and learning more about her important job.
Thank you to everyone who supported our students and helped make this fundraiser a success—it truly makes a difference! 💙

They spent time with our 4th and 5th-grade students teaching a very valuable life skill—sewing! 🧵✨ Students discovered how to hand stitch and even had the opportunity to sew their own pillows using a machine.
We are so grateful for this hands-on learning experience and the time, care, and expertise shared with our students. These are skills they will carry with them for years to come!
Thank you, Friends of Hillsboro Library, for making learning meaningful and fun! 💙

Our 2nd- and 3rd-grade students had a great time learning different card games! Not only were they having fun, but they were also building important skills like critical thinking, strategy, cooperation, and problem-solving.
Playing card games is a wonderful way for students to learn while they play — and the smiles around the room showed just how much they enjoyed it! 😊
